The NBA

I know that the NBA has multiple programs that benefit the community. There are a lot of programs like NBA together which is a program which spreads awareness about Covid 19 and NBA green which is a program that spreads awareness on being environmentally friendly. They also have mental health programs, food drives, and players make huge donations to charities and organizations.

I know that there have been some negative things in the NBA in the past. NBA team owner Donald Sterling was banned for life and fined 2.5 million from making racist comments. The fight against racism still continues as it does in many other communities.

There are some things I wish I knew about the basketball community such as how do you own a team or how some players grew up in poverty but now make huge salaries and what that feels like to them.

History

Basketball has a very long history. It was created by James Naismith and was first played in 1891. A few decades later the National Basketball Association was formed. It only had 11 teams. Now, The NBA has 30 teams and it is a rapidly growing sport that has now gained worldwide popularity.

Charity

The NBA is a very charitable association. Players and teams donate large amounts of money to charitable organizations to help families around the world in need. Some examples are UNICEF and Habitat For Humanity. They also have their own organization called NBA Cares for donating and helping out with the community.

Salary

The NBA is the highest paying sport. Out of the worlds’ highest paid athletes, players in the NBA represent a significant portion of the list. The highest NBA yearly salary right now is $40,000,000 while the lowest is 100,000

Negative aspects

The NBA has a few negative aspects. The NBA excludes women from playing in the same league like many other professional sports. That is why the WNBA exists. Another negative thing is the fact that WNBA players don’t get payed the same as NBA players. I feel like this would be unfair to them.

Misconceptions

There are a few NBA misconceptions. Some people think that when players play in the NBA its like a sport to them but in reality, players might consider playing in the NBA more like a job than a sport because they get paid to win games.  These exist because players think differently about their jobs than fans and i can change this by educating them to change their opinions.
